My HR Hat

October 19, 2010

Just like many of you small family businesses out there know, you have to wear many hats, and it’s no different here at our nursery. Multi-tasking becomes second nature to the point where you begin to develop Multiple Personality Disorder. I myself, was just appointed (aka assigned) the task of HR and like any creative, my initial reaction was to internally freak out at the thought of such an undertaking. I was overwhelmed to say the least. Sure, we had the basics in place, but everything was old and some of it out of date. Any disciplinary procedures we used to have established were now nothing more than a faint memory.

Basically, I was starting from scratch. Terrific.

So, I sorted through a rather deep pile of our HR “stuff”, annoyed our office manager Traci with HR questions and did a lot of research online. I probed my husband for his knowledge and hired a Human Resources consultant. I sat in my office laminating endless bilingual safety signs I made (here’s where also being the nursery’s graphic designer came into play).

Through the boughts of frustration and whining about government regulations and standards, I began to find my way. And now it’s not so overwhelming. Slowly but surely, things are changing, things are getting reorganized. And the idea of HR isn’t so daunting anymore.

Am I the only one that’s had sweaty palms over Human Resources? How have you handled your ‘HR hat’?
